Bucknuts Morning 5

It is of course signing day, and Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss the following:

* How will today go for Ohio State? Will they land Dawand Jones and Enokk Vimahi?

* With the news that Doug Nester is likely headed to Virginia Tech -- coupled with all the other misses on the offensive line for the Buckeyes -- is O-line coach Greg Studrawa on borrowed time as far as Ryan Day is concerned?

* Will OSU end up landing Rutgers grad transfer C/G Jonah Jackson?

All of that and more on the signing day extravaganza.

We are beyond thrilled to bring you the debut of The Joshua Perry Show. Yes, the Joshua Perry you know from his days as a starting linebacker, captain and national champion at Ohio State. He was also an early fourth-round draft pick by the (then) San Diego Chargers in 2016, and played two seasons in the NFL.

Joshua (not Josh) brings a unique and ultra-educated view of all things regarding Ohio State football.

On today's show, he discusses the following and much more:

* What is now the late National Signing Day in college football is this Wednesday. The Buckeyes are hoping to close strong with some offensive linemen. Namely Dawand Jones and Enokk Vimahi. The Buckeyes could also land Rutgers grad transfer Jonah Jackson later this month.

*As Joshua looks at OSU's 2019 roster, and let’s presume quarterback Justin Fields will be eligible immediately, what are his thoughts? What are potential strengths and weaknesses?

* Ohio State had a big-time shake-up on its coaching staff. What does JP think of all the moves?

* What are realistic expectations for the 2019 Buckeyes?

* Each show we’re going to tell a story from Joshua's playing days. There is a funny story (well, funny now, not at the time) regarding how Urban Meyer viewed Joshua when Meyer first arrived in Columbus.

Welcome in and enjoy the maiden voyage with No. 37!

The arctic chill sweeping much of the country has done nothing to stop Ohio State on the recruiting trail. No days off for our trusty staff out trying to improve the team's talent level.

These days, that means the guys up front. The big, tough offensive linemen. You know the names by now: Doug Nester and Dawand Jones. Will they be Buckeyes?

There is much debate left there. We discuss.

Also, the best offensive lineman committed to the Buckeyes has an active travel schedule. Should that be a concern?

And we get our featured guest - 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong - to answer whether or not he thinks Tate Martell should be eligible right away at Miami because of Ohio State's coaching change.

The linebacker position was a weakness for Ohio State throughout much of the 2018 season.

However, with all three starters returning -- plus some young, hungry, talented players on the rise -- could the LB unit actually be a strength for the Buckeyes this fall? Especially with new coaches on the defensive side of the ball?

The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus:

* The Buckeyes did lose a linebacker on Tuesday as Keandre Jones decided to transfer to Maryland.

* What is the latest on the recruitment of 2019 offensive linemen Doug Nester and Dawand Jones?

* Ohio State's men's basketball team was thumped at Michigan last night. What can we expect from the Buckeyes from here?

It's freezing cold in Ohio. We needed something to warm us up.

So we brought it in Duane Long for what heats us: football chatter.

We get into next season and answer some key questions as the ice outside accumulates:

* What is Ohio State's strongest position group?

* What's the position group you’re most concerned about?

* Which Buckeye we don’t know very well yet will break out next season?

* Which Buckeye was not good last season but will be very good this season?

* Taking a look at the 2019 schedule - where is biggest threat of repeat of Purdue ‘18/Iowa ‘17?

Sit back and enjoy some pure football chatter. It's what we do.

Ohio State has offered graduate transfer offensive lineman Jonah Jackson from Rutgers, who was an honorable mention All-Big Ten performer in 2018. He also started half of the 2017 season for the Scarlet Knights at center.

Jackson isn't transferring to merely be on a two-deep somewhere; he is obviously switching schools so he can start, and start for a program that has a chance to win big.

What are the Buckeyes' chances of landing Jackson, and what would it mean if they did?

Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus:

* The official visit from offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi to Ohio State went well over the weekend. What else do you need to know about the four-star guard?

* What is the latest on Doug Nester and Dawand Jones? (If it seems like we talk about those guys on every show, it's because we do.)

* Is there any concern that Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields won't be eligible immediately in 2019? Or are there no worries in that department?

All of that and more on the Monday extravaganza.

As the recruitment of Ohio State verbal commitment Doug Nester drags on, Jonah Booker wonders if the four-star offensive guard is looking for a reason not to be a Buckeye.

JBook joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to discuss that, plus:

* Who is ultimately in charge of Ohio State's defense? Greg Mattison or Jeff Hafley? They both hold the title of co-defensive coordinator (with Hafley also having the title of defensive backs coach). Yes, they will collaborate, but if one of them had to be the shot-caller, who would it be?

* What do we think of the Buckeyes' 5-man stable of scholarship running backs in 2019?

Well, we asked. Here. On this show.

247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong makes his usual Thursday appearance to address the rankings of Zach Harrison, Garrett Wilson and Harry Miller.

Why did they drop?

Why didn't Miller make the grade?

Why doesn't every 247Sports recruiting expert have to reveal their personal 5-star rankings (they do ... stay tuned)?

It is obviously nothing new that an Ohio State head coach would focus hard on landing the top talent from the state of Ohio.

However, Ryan Day is making even more of a concerted effort in terms of recruiting Ohio than many might have anticipated. And this reminds us of the approach used by Jim Tressel when he was the Buckeyes' boss from 2001-10.

The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus:

* Offensive line recruiting for OSU, including new 2020 commit Jakob James from Cincinnati Elder.

* What are thoughts on Day's first coaching staff at Ohio State?

* Tonight brings a big game for OSU basketball at the Schott against Purdue, but the Buckeyes will be without sophomore forward Kyle Young for at least a month.

Yep, a commitment from one of Ohio's best offensive lineman that's what. And you know it heated up Duane Long.

Duane is here to talk Jakob James and Ohio State's clear focus on bolstering the offensive line in the Class of 2020. So far, the Buckeyes have seven commitments ... all on offense.

We also break down the latest in the recruitment of Dewand Jones, the enormous Class of 2019 offensive lineman. Don't close the book on that class just yet.

Also: One currently unheralded Buckeye on offense and one on defense that Duane thinks needs to play a big role next season for Ohio State to thrive.

It was not as big of a recruiting weekend as initially anticipated for Ohio State due to the weather, but it was still rather large. Both literally and figuratively.

Offensive line prospects Doug Nester and Dawand Jones were at OSU for official visits over the weekend. How did they go? Will both of them sign with Ohio State exactly two weeks and two days from now when the now "late" signing period commences (Feb. 6)?

As for the team itself, will new linebackers coach Al Washington make any personnel changes as far as the Buckeyes' starting LBs? Or will the three returning starters once again be starters this fall?

What's the latest on Keandre Jones? He's in the transfer portal, but might he end up returning to OSU for his senior year?

Is quarterback depth a concern for Ohio State this year? Or is too much made of that?

And what is up with the Buckeyes' basketball team, who have lost four straight games?

Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for JBook's usual Friday visit to discuss that, plus:

Tate Martell was adamant that he would stay at Ohio State and compete for the starting quarterback job, even if Justin Fields ended up transferring to OSU.

Well, Fields did end up transferring to OSU, and now it's Martell who could be on the way out.

It came to light on Thursday that Martell is in the NCAA's transfer portal. Does this mean Ohio State head coach Ryan Day had a heart-to-heart with Martell (read: told Martell that Fields was going to be the starter), which led to Martell changing his mind?

Also, what can be expected of Fields in 2019 if he in fact the Buckeyes' starting QB?

"The Granddaddy of Them All" is not getting much discussion amongst Ohio State fans.

Jonah Booker believes Ohio State made the correct decision in promoting Ryan Day to head coach, even without conducting a national search.

However, JBook says that Day must do a complete overhaul of the defensive coaching staff.

JBook joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to discuss that, plus:

* What is our overall confidence level in Day?

* Are we buying into any of the conspiracy theories that Urban Meyer's decision to retire really wasn't his decision alone?

* Is there any chance Dwayne Haskins wins the Heisman Trophy tomorrow night?

There's an old adage about the transfer of power: You don't want to replace The Guy. You want to the guy who replaces the guy who replaced The Guy.

Ryan Day won't have that luxury. He is replacing Urban Meyer (see: The Guy).

Can he pull it off? Time will tell.

Can he maintain Ohio State's recruiting momentum that actually started the day Urban was announced as Ohio State's coach on xxxxx.

We bring in Steve Wiltfong, director of recruiting for 247Sports, to get his opinion on how Day will fare with the current recruits and long term on the trail.

They say you don't want to be the coach who follows a legend. You want to replace the coach that replaced a legend.

However, Urban Meyer is absolutely a legend, and Ryan Day will of course be taking over for him as Ohio State's head coach following the Rose Bowl.

On today's show, the People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss the following:

* Looking back on the Meyer era and everything he accomplished.

* Thoughts on Day taking the gig, without a national search being conducted by OSU. Is he ready for this job?

* Mickey Marotti and Mark Pantoni sticking around on Day's staff, which is huge.

* What coaching changes might Day make on the defensive side of the ball?

* Do we believe that Meyer will never coach again?

Nervous that Ohio State might be overlooking Northwestern in Saturday's Big Ten Championship Game?

Well, Jonah Booker says you shouldn't be. He expects the No. 6 Buckeyes (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) will have their way with the No. 21 Wildcats (8-4, 8-1).

JBook joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to break down the OSU-NU matchup and why he is so confident.

"Win and you're in" is not the phrase Ohio State can use as it enters the Big Ten Championship Game against Northwestern.

If the Buckeyes want to make the College Football Playoff, a narrow win over the Wildcats likely will not do the trick. The CFP selection committee made that fairly clear when it placed OSU No. 6 in the most recent rankings.

The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss the Buckeyes' CFP chances, plus:

* Northwestern is no joke. What problems might the Wildcats give the Buckeyes?

* It's still so much fun to look back on the 62-39 win over Michigan, so that's exactly what we're going to do. It was one of the most-enjoyable OSU-UM games for Ohio State fans, and that is saying a lot.

* What can be expected from Wyatt Davis as he takes over for the injured Demetrius Knox at right guard?

What is an “Urban special”?

It is when Urban Meyer is an underdog – or just doubted in general – and he makes your team look like the junior varsity playing the Division I state champions.

Let’s be honest: It happened to Ohio State in the 2006 national championship game when Meyer’s Florida squad handed the Buckeyes a 41-14 defeat.

And it sure happened on Saturday when Meyer’s Ohio State squad dismantled Michigan and its No. 1-ranked defense 62-39. Which included the Buckeyes taking a knee at the 7-yard line in the closing moments to not rub it in.

Alex Gleitman joins Dave Biddle for today’s show to look back on The Game, look ahead to the matchup against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game this Saturday in Indianapolis, talk about OSU’s chances to make the College Football Playoff, and Wyatt Davis replacing the injured Demetrius Knox as Ohio State’s starting right guard.

All of that and more on the Monday extravaganza.

Also on the docket:

* How might rainy weather affect The Game?

* What is something Ohio State can perhaps exploit about UM?

The stakes are high. They always are for The Game. But the tension is amped when a Big Ten title game berth is on the line.

Add in the speculation surrounding Ohio State and you have an emotionally charged atmosphere leading up to the regular season finale on noon at The Shoe.

Duane Long is here to help put it all in perspective.

** Is Urban Meyer really considering an exit from Columbus?

** When it comes to Ohio State's struggles on defense, is the problem scheme, personnel or ... both?

** What can we expect from The Game? Will Dwayne Haskins and the offense produce against arguably the nation's best defense? Can the Ohio State defense rally after a miserable effort in College Park?

It is the best rivalry in college football, and the stakes could not be much higher for the 2018 edition of the Ohio State-Michigan game.

The Wolverines are favored by 3.5 points, meaning the Buckeyes are underdogs in The Game in Columbus for the first time since 2004. (Which was a 37-21 OSU victory in Troy Smith's coming-out-party, by the way.)

What chances do we give Ohio State of pulling off the mild upset and sending Jim Harbaugh to 0-4 against OSU, and Urban Meyer to 7-0 against UM?

The New Orleans Saints (also known in some circles as the New Orleans Buckeyes) are arguably the best team in the NFL this season.

They also have a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Drew Brees, who is having an outstanding season.

Yet, the Saints often use backup QB Taysom Hill in red zone and short yardage situations.

Ohio State is starting to do the same thing with Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell.

Will the Buckeyes continue giving Martell more opportunities, or is that more in the window dressing category?

Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to discuss that, plus:

Many people expected Ohio State would move up in the College Football Playoff rankings this week, but that did not happen.

The Buckeyes remain No. 10 in the CFP rankings, and not only need to win out to make the four-team field, they likely need some help from the outside. And the Buckeyes also need to pass the eye test down the stretch. You know, actually look the part of a playoff squad.

Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus:

* What is the biggest concern for the Buckeyes in terms of facing Michigan State this Saturday in East Lansing? Can OSU run the ball effectively against the Spartans' defense?

* Ohio State will tip off its basketball season tonight at Cincinnati. What a cool way to start the season. What can be expected from Chris Holtmann's team?

It's Ohio State vs. Michigan State this Saturday in East Lansing. It's always a big game. But this is a BIG game.

If Ohio State wins in impressive fashion, sincere faith in this version of the Buckeyes could be 'restored.'

Former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith's court case involving his ex-wife, Courtney, was resolved on Tuesday.

The most notable item is that any charges of domestic violence by Zach Smith were dropped. He pleaded guilty to a minor misdemeanor of “disorderly conduct.”

That won't fit with the national narrative, but it is reality.

Also, what is up with the report that there is strife between Urban Meyer and Gene Smith? Meyer refuted it yesterday, and we believe him. But we also think there are still hard feelings on Meyer's end that are geared toward OSU president Michael Drake.

You're also probably familiar with the "Bucknuts Roundtable" during the season, where our experts share opinions on the upcoming game and other relative topics.

After getting a lot of requests to do the Roundtable in podcast format, and seeing the great success of the BM5, we thought it would be a great idea to kind of mash the two together, with a focus on recruiting. Thus, the creation of "Bucknuts Recruiting Radio."

Want daily inside scoop on the Buckeyes? Get VIP access with a 7-Day FREE Trial now!

This is the 12th episode of BRR, a podcast that will hopefully become a mainstay here on Bucknuts. The goal of the show is to bring on Bucknuts experts, national and other team experts, other media members, recruits, coaches, and more, who can shed some light into the big storylines around Ohio State's recruiting efforts. It's going to be a longer form show that could be roundtable or interview format, and should be highly entertaining for the recruitniks out there.

The Buckeyes were down by 12 points with 8 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but mounted two late touchdown drives to earn the win.

There are many things we will remember about this game for a long time, such as Binjimen Victor's 47-yard touchdown reception and the coming-out-party for OSU defensive end Chase Young.

Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle to discuss all of that, plus:

* Ohio State's defensive line is very banged up. Nick Bosa is obviously out until at least November, and now Dre'Mont Jones and Robert Landers are both dinged.

* Why doesn't Ohio State utilize QB sneaks in short-yardage situations?

All of that and more on the Monday extravaganza.

A lot of people got hot and bothered by a graphic that Ohio State released on Thursday that said, in all caps, "SILENCE."

It was obviously in reference to quieting Penn State's "white out" Saturday night ... but that did not stop people from expressing all kinds of fake outrage via social media.

Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for today's show, and let's just say JBook is not amused by the developments yesterday.

But the real story is how the Buckeyes will fare against the Nittany Lions, and we get knee deep into discussion about that.

Also, will Urban Meyer continue to allow Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson to keep the foot on the pedal offensively?

All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza.

Welcome to the first-ever Bucknuts DraftCast. This podcast will dive deep on Ohio State prospects that could be taken in the 2019 NFL Draft.

It’s fitting our first guest is Dane Brugler from The Athletic. Let’s call it playing the trump card early because Dane is the best there is at breaking down college talent. The Ohio native and current Texas resident goes into extreme detail on the possible NFL futures of:

* Dwayne Haskins

* Nick Bosa

* Dre’Mont Jones

* Isaiah Prince

* Jordan Fuller

* Parris Campbell

* Mike Jordan

Then Dane shares his expectations for the Ohio State-Penn State tussle in Happy Valley on Saturday night.

It's been 61 days since Ohio State got a commitment.

The wait is nearly over and when it rains ... you know.

Could the Buckeyes soon add three new faces to the Class of 2019?

Yes.

Do we have the names and a breakdown for each prospect?

Yes.

Does the review come from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong?

Yes.

Have you come to the right place to increase your Buckeye knowledge and spend 15 minutes of your quality time?

Yes.

Enjoy, 'Nutters ...

Urban Meyer is back. No matter what those outside Ohio have to say.

Has Meyer's absence hurt Ohio State's recruiting efforts?

We bring in 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong to answer this question. Nobody is more plugged in on the trail and we think Bucknutters will be pleased with what Steve has to say on this topic.

We also talked about:

* Jameson Willams - next in the class?

* Zach Harrison - could he show up at Penn State's 'white out' vs. Ohio State?

* The Big Ten - what the heck?

All that and more!

If you're on Bucknuts, you're likely a fan of the "Bucknuts Morning 5", our daily radio show/podcast that talks all things Ohio State football, basketball, recruiting, and more.

This is the 11th episode of BRR, a podcast that will hopefully become a mainstay here on Bucknuts.

The previous episode of BRR featured a catch-up with 2019 Ohio State commit Ronnie Hickman. This next episode features another current Buckeyes commitment Bryson Shaw hanging out with us, including:

*How his senior season is going

*A look back on his journey from Wisconsin commit to Ohio State pledge

*His relationship with Dwayne Haskins, who went to the same high school

Jeff Wadsworth quit his post on Ohio State's board of trustees because he did not believe Urban Meyer's penalty of three games was long enough.

Then Wadsworth proceeded to air dirty laundry to the New York Times on Thursday, and tried to paint OSU and Meyer in a very bad light.

This of course does not sit well with us here at Bucknuts. We felt it was a very weak move by a man who was known as a weak "leader" during his time at Ohio State.

Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus talk some actual football for most of the show.

* What are we most excited to see tomorrow when the Buckeyes kick off the 2018 season against visiting Oregon State?

* What will the offensive game-plan and overall offensive scheme for OSU?

* How concerned should you be about the offensive line?

* What are JBook's prediction for how Ohio State will fare overall this season?

All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza.

* Big Ten champ ...

* The College Football Playoff quartet ...

The offensive line was always a question mark for Ohio State when talking about the 2018 season.

Now just three days from the opener against Oregon State? Well, it is an even bigger concern.

The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to talk about that, plus:

* What about the optimism when analyzing this offensive line?

* What are thoughts on the Buckeyes' starting linebackers?

* How soon will Tuf Borland really be back in action?

* As if this month-long saga couldn't get any stranger, how about Tom Herman giving Brett McMurphy an exclusive one-on-one interview. What a coincidence, right?

All of that and more on the Wednesday extravaganza.

It might not feel like it quite yet, but game week has arrived for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes will host Oregon State on Saturday (noon ET; ABC), and Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss the following:

* Is the offensive line still by far and away Bank's biggest concern about the Buckeyes entering the 2018 season?

* What are his updated prediction on who the starting linebackers will be? (The depth chart is expected to be released Tuesday.)

* When does Bank think third-year sophomore middle linebacker Tuf Borland be back from his Achilles injury?

* What are expectations for starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins this season?

* The Buckeyes announced seven captains for this season. They include four seniors on offense, including Isaiah Prince, plus wide receivers Parris CampbellJohnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin. On defense, the captains are Borland, junior defensive end Nick Bosa and junior safety Jordan Fuller. Does any football team consistently name more captains than OSU? And what does it say about Borland that he's a captain at such an early stage of his career, while coming off an injury no less?

* Interim head coach/offensive coordinator Ryan Day, along with associate head coach/defensive coordinator Greg Schiano will meet with the media late this morning. What questions would Bank like to hear them answer?
